Our fascination with prehistoric rock art is revealing. Not just a study into the past of what people did in order to record history and culture, but a databank for people who were to come later. A place where information was exchanged. The paintings were always highly visible to people who travelled by, and an important landmark on their journey. Sometimes they showed the way to warn them of a beast or inform them of animal migration. At other times hand stencils were a signature of the prehistoric graffiti artist who passed by or made his dwelling there. Fast forward 40,000 years later and creative billboards are still one of the most effective forms of communication.
